But it was still free!
It’s a 79 CM400T. Last run in 2009, it was taken down for a full gasket replacement and then sat in a climate controlled garage waiting for a second chance to roll. Since it’s a less desirable model I have no issues modifying the heck out of it.
The almighty Google has already provided inspiration.
Yes, that will do nicely!

Just to warn you those 400 twins have shit parts availability and some of the worst carbs to work on that Honda ever made.
*I’ve resurrected 3 79-81 honda 400 twins. I like the hondamatic varieties.
Have fun though!

Where is this magical land where people give away free complete old Hondas!? I shit you not, this is listed for $650.

I’m gonna see if the guy will take my spare SBC350 in trade.

Family! My cousin was tired of looking at it in his garage. He has a couple of Harleys too but he wants actual money for them.
$650?? Yikes! It looks like it was in a fire. If you can do some horse trading it’d be easier to swallow.

Yeah, those are oddball carbs. I have a balancer. Should help.
There won’t be much stock left when it’s done. Triple tree, main frame and engine. And the comstars. I like those. A Hondamatic bike would have been fun too.
Baby steps. Get it running first then play.

The air cutoff valves, the accelerator pump, and the diaphragm slides make it pretty easy to hit a couple hundred bucks in parts, few are still made by Honda so quality can be a bit spotty as well.
If you’re planning on going with pods I will also warn you that these bikes do not run well on anything but the stock airbox. People have done it, but it’s not easy.

The airbox thing is good to know. From my limited research I see that these don’t like having the exhaust crossover removed as well. Everyone calls it an x pipe. The size of it makes it seem more like a 2 stroke expansion chamber in my mind though. That may be part of that carb problem.
These were built when H was still evolving (much like the 3 wheelers). It’s pretty interesting to dig in and see what works and what doesn’t.
